Connecting

POPmonitor says it cannot connect to my service provider because a Socket/103 error or another type of network error occurred.
Verify that you entered the correct name or IP address of your POP server.

POPmonitor says it cannot check my mailbox because authentication is needed.
Select Server requires secure password (APOP) in the Advanced POP Settings section of the Account Settings window.

My service provider requires a secure connection using the SSL protocol (for instance Gmail)
POPmonitor doesn’t support the SSL protocol by default. However, by using the third-party SSL Enabler software it's quite easy to add this functionality. Click here to download the SSL Enabler software.

I’m trying to connect to my Hotmail or AOL account but I keep getting network errors.
POPmonitor only supports mail servers that use the POP3 protocol. Hotmail and AOL do not support that protocol and will not work with POPmonitor.

I’m trying to connect to my Compuserve account but my password is not accepted.
In order to use the POP3 mailbox feature of Compuserve Classic you will need to obtain a separate POP3 password from Compuserve. To activate your POP3 mailbox on your Compuserve Classic account, GO POPMAIL online or contact the Compuserve Customer Support department for assistance.

In which order does POPmonitor judge whether mail should be trusted, flagged or deleted?
– Is the sender on the list of trusted senders?
– Yes: stop checking and flag the message with a green dot.
– No: continue checking.
– Is the sender on the list of blocked senders?
– Yes: stop checking and either flag the message with a red dot or automatically delete it.
– No: continue checking.
– Does any filter with a Trust action apply?
– Yes: stop checking and flag the message with a green dot.
– No: continue checking.
– Does any filter with a Delete action apply?
– Yes: stop checking and automatically delete the message.
– No: continue checking.
– Does any filter with a Flag/Delete action apply?
– Yes: stop checking and either flag the message with a red dot or automatically delete it.
– No: continue checking.
– Does any filter with a Flag action apply?
– Yes: stop checking and flag the message with a red dot.
– No: flag the message with a black dot.

After checking my mailbox the available messages briefly show up in the message list and then they disappear.
You probably selected Switch automatically after checking/filtering in the Account Settings window. Try switching this option off or make sure the option is configured properly in regard to your e-mail application.

Bouncing

POPmonitor says it cannot connect to my service provider because a Socket/103 error or another type of network error occurred.
Verify that you entered the correct name or IP address of your SMTP server. Please note that you should enter the SMTP server of the service provider that you use to connect to the Internet (which is not necessarily the provider that hosts the POP3 mailbox).

POPmonitor says it cannot bounce a message because authentication is needed.
Select Server requires authentication before sending mail in the Advanced SMTP Settings section of the Account Settings window.

I get the error message "POPmonitor said <AUTH> and then the server replied:
500 Command unrecognized"

Apparently no authentication is needed for the specified SMTP server. Deselect Server requires authentication before sending mail in the Advanced SMTP Settings section of the Account Settings window.

Using e-mail applications

Is POPmonitor compatible with Emailer, Entourage, Eudora, Magellan Pro, Mailsmith, Netscape Communicator, Outlook Express or PowerMail?
Yes. These e-mail applications can process e-mail related AppleScript events and therefore they are fully supported by POPmonitor.

Is POPmonitor compatible with Apple Mail?
Yes. POPmonitor is fully compatible with Apple Mail 1.2, 1.3 and 2.0. See this item also.

Is POPmonitor compatible with Netscape 6/7, Mozilla or Thunderbird?
No. Netscape 6/7, Mozilla and Thunderbird do not support e-mail related AppleScript events.

Communication between POPmonitor and my e-mail application is not working properly.
POPmonitor uses AppleScript events to talk to your e-mail application. Make sure that your e-mail application supports e-mail related AppleScript events and that the AppleScript system software is properly installed in your active system folder.

Registering

Can I use the same registration code for the Mac OS 8/9 version and the Mac OS X version?
Yes. You can use the same registration code for both versions.

Miscellaneous

Is POPmonitor compatible with Intel Macs?
Yes, POPmonitor can be used on Intel Macs.

Is POPmonitor compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 ‘Lion’?
No. POPmonitor is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 ‘Lion’. A new version of the application will not be released. As of Mac OS X 10.7 ‘Lion’ the POPmonitor application has become obsolete.

POPmonitor crashes after I quit the application.
The Crash-on-Quit problem is caused by a file caching bug in the Mac OS X operating system. The POPmonitor application and its preferences files are not affected. You can solve this problem by renaming the POPmonitor application file or by moving the POPmonitor application file or folder to a different location on your hard disk.

POPmonitor crashes for no apparent reason.
If you are using Mac OS 8/9 then try increasing the amount of memory for the POPmonitor application. The default memory settings should work for most users but if you have created more than five accounts or if your mailbox contains hundreds of messages it might help to increase the memory setting.

Another cause of random crashes (while using POPmonitor or shortly after using POPmonitor) can be the Palm Instant Desktop system extension. If you have that system extension installed make sure that it is version 2.6.3 or newer. You can download the Palm Instant Desktop 2.6.3 system extension at the PalmOne website.

Downloaded attachments are not processed properly.
POPmonitor needs the application Stuffit Expander to process downloaded attachments. Usually Stuffit Expander can be found in the Internet Applications folder (Mac OS 8/9) or in the Applications:Utilities folder (Mac OS X). If you do not have Stuffit Expander please visit the Allume website to download a free copy.

How can I re-run the Configuration Assistant?
The Configuration Assistant will appear if no POPmonitor 2 preferences are found. These preferences are located in a folder called POPmonitor 2 Preferences. On Mac OS 8/9 you can find this folder inside the main Preferences folder (inside the System folder). On Mac OS X you can find this folder in Users:[your_name]:Library:Preferences.

Quit the POPmonitor application, delete the POPmonitor 2 Preferences folder and launch the POPmonitor application again. The Configuration Assistant will now appear (after the startup screen disappears).

Where did all my accounts go?
You closed all account windows but they are not gone. Go to the Window menu to make your account windows visible again.

Are localized versions of POPmonitor available?
No. POPmonitor is only available in English. The application will not be localized in any other language.

Is there a Windows version of POPmonitor?
No. Currently a Windows version of POPmonitor is not available.

When all else fails...

When POPmonitor encounters an error it will display a dialog with a clear explanation of the problem. If neither the explanation nor the User Guide nor the list of frequently asked questions helps you in solving the problem then contact us by sending e-mail to support@popmonitor.com.

Mention the exact error message and (if available) the error code in the lower left corner of the dialog. Or you can send us a screenshot of the error dialog (press Command-Shift-3 to create a screenshot). Also mention which version of POPmonitor and which version of the Mac OS you are using.
